LED Screens: An Introduction

LED Screens

LED Screens have become very popular in recent years and this is not surprising considering the range of benefits that they offer. A LED screen is simply a flat, vertical panel usually made of clear plastic with an array of LED lights as pixels. Their brilliant clarity makes them a popular choice for billboards and store signs. LED screens are also suitable for use outdoors, where their wide color gamut makes them a good choice for outdoor signage. LED screens are also becoming increasingly popular as signs and interfaces for interactive purposes in games such as World of Warcraft, augmented reality applications and video games.

So, what are LED Screens? LED screens are a group of devices and technologies which combine the efficiency of full LED backlighting with the extended display area of a full LCD panel. One example of this is the implementation of Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) technology into an LED screen. The result is not only increased screen resolution for the same measured pixel count, but also increased power consumption for the same level of energy consumption. The increased power consumption is due to the change from a high voltage bipolar transistor (or transistor on which the pixel is stored) to an semiconductor diodally-conductor one (or semiconductor on which the pixel is charged). The resulting effect is a lower level of power consumption from the unit, as well as a correspondingly lower energy consumption from the battery or the power supply.

LED backlighting

LED screens are also used for creating opaque displays. For example, many ATM machines use LED backlighting to create the image of the teller, whose arms are shown to the audience. The same technique can also be used in displays at airports, whereby large images can be shown onto computer screens. The advantage of using LED backlighting in this way is that the computer screen is created with a high contrast level, in order to eliminate the blurring effects caused by eye fatigue. In the case of ATM machines, the lower level of contrast means that the machine is easier to follow and read.

LED screens have also found applications in another niche area, namely in bezels. Bezels are curved panels that fit between elements such as columns or shelves, to create a certain amount of space. At the same time, bezels are commonly used in display consoles to give a more uniform look to the content that is displayed on the console itself. While it is not clear why display consoles should use LED screens over other forms of backlighting, it is probably because display consoles represent the ultimate in ‘designer’ gadgetry. Their main purpose is to promote the merchandise that they contain, and the use-cases for bezels seem to be endless. For example, they might often need to display the logo of the company that manufactured the gadget in question, or display a collection of items related to that brand or that product.

LED screens

A final application of lcd and LED screens comes in the area of outdoor signage. Outdoor signage is an integral part of city planning, as it often serves as guide-signs for motorists. However, these signs can also serve another purpose, as they can be used to draw attention to special features of parks and other public areas. To this end, the use-cases of lcd and led screens seem to be numerous.

As previously stated, LED screens are not the only technologies out there that can be used for the purpose of providing an attractive effect to a wall. Multi-painters and vinyl frames are another option, offering similar aesthetic qualities. Multi-painters, however, are a better solution if you are planning to cover an entire wall. They will be able to cover up large sections of the wall without needing to replace the whole wall, and their lower costs make them more practical for interior spaces. Vinyl frames are also a good option for interior spaces, but they offer a lower level of customization than multi-painters, since the vinyl can be customized with your chosen logo or design. Using LED screens is one of the best solutions for both interior and exterior applications, especially when you consider the benefits and the low costs involved.
